about

Putrefaction is described as the decomposition of matter, especially that which is organic. In alchemical science, it was believed for an object to be purified, it must first undergo the process of "Nigredo", also referred to as blackening. This process was effectively putrefaction, for the purpose of creating better ingredients.

This segment of the purification process is required due to the belief that all living beings rot and die before they become whole and pure again. For example, as an apple rots and withers, its seeds take root in the ground, bringing life and rebirth in pure form from its decay.

The putrefaction process was also seen as spiritually important (as the process strictly was literal and for physical ingredients) by the renowned psychiatrist Carl Jung, who applied his idea that the putrefaction of the spirit in therapy would cause its best to emerge from the destroyed husk the process created, tying major elemental forces from the alchemical studies to this process to reinforce his theory.

The effects of putrefaction are reflected within the audio transcriptions provided within this page. Each of them, while not a 1:1 representation of the process, has been decayed and ripped apart into raw form through effects and manipulation, left to rot so something you may enjoy can be found within. We give thanks to those studying the work we have provided thus far, and hope you find your own purification through this music.
